Richard Prince is an artist who screenshot Instagram photos, printed large copies of them and put them up for sale at the Frieze Art Fair in New York. However, none of these photos where his own, which according to CNN Money, is causing a legal argument over Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) owned social site Instagram’s privacy policies. As stated in Instagram’s Terms of Use, users own their own content posted to the site. However, its privacy policy explains “Once you have shared User Content or made it public, that User Content may be re-shared by others," which is what Prince is using to defend his case. Most find that the issue lies in the topic of consent. CNN Money reports that there is a way Prince could have done this legally through Instagram by licensing, or basically purchasing the rights for the photos he used which Instagram claims he did not.
