This announcement comes only two days before the season 14 finale of the show with executive hoping that this news will boost the viewership of the finale episode. In its prime, “American Idol” created a huge profit for Fox, averaging over 20 million viewers every season from 2003 through 2011. Through those eight consecutive seasons, "Idol" was the the top rated non-sports television show. Today, the show only averages 10.3 million viewers and is no longer Fox’s top rated program being beaten by hot new drama "Empire."
