National Donut Day, which occurs on the first Friday of June every year, was started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those who served treats and assistance to soldiers on the front lines during World War I known as “donut lassies.” This is not to be confused with National Doughnut Day, which is in November and celebrates the actual food. Nonetheless, donut shops are still participating in National Donut Days with some pretty sweet freebees. According to Fox, Dunkin’ Donuts (NASDAQ: DNKN) offers a free doughnut of a customer's choice with a purchase of any beverage. Krispy Kreme (NYSE: KKD) will be offering free doughnuts in specific locations and Entenmann’s Facebook page, fans can enter a contest to win free doughnuts for a year!
